How to buy a magnetic screen door
Measure the opening, match a published fit size, and choose mesh and magnet layout from the listing. SnapScreen's editor's pick is the AUGO fiberglass screen.
Updated 2026-10-31. Editorial opinion from listing specs, not a lab test.
A magnetic screen door is a split mesh curtain. You walk through the middle, and magnets in the seam pull the two halves shut behind you. It is not a hinged storm door, and it is not a retractable cassette. The good ones are cheap, fast to hang, and honest about being a seasonal screen. The bad ones gap at the center, peel off the trim, or were bought for a door they do not fit.
SnapScreen's editor's pick for a normal house door is AUGO fiberglass screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab). The page we opened lists a fiberglass mesh, a 38 × 83 in screen for a 36 × 82 in door, magnets that run the full length of the center, a full-frame hook-and-loop mount, push pins, and keep-open snaps. That is the combination we would buy. The rest of this guide is how to tell whether that listing, or a different one, matches your opening.
Measure the opening, not the door slab
Width is the clear space between the side stops. Height is from the threshold, or the floor if there is no threshold, up to the underside of the top stop. Measure width at the top, middle, and bottom. Measure height on the left and the right. Write down the smallest width and the smallest height. Old frames are rarely square, and the screen has to live with the tight spot.
Do not measure the decorative casing outside the opening, and do not measure only the door slab if the slab sits inside a deeper frame. The screen sticks to the frame you can actually press tape onto. The step-by-step worksheet is in how to measure for a magnetic screen door.
Screen size and fit size are different numbers
AUGO's fiberglass listing is the clean example. The screen is 38 × 83 in. The door it claims to fit is 36 × 82 in. The extra inch or two is overlap so the hook-and-loop has something to grab and the hem can meet the threshold. If you order a "36 inch screen" for a 36 inch opening, you may have no overlap left.
Other listings are sloppier. AUGO 74 × 81 screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) states 74 × 81 in in the title and a polyester material, but the short text we saved does not split mesh size from doorway size. IKSTAR polyester screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) says 38 × 82 in in the title and "fit to 38 × 81 in" in a technical field. When a page disagrees with itself, treat the fit as check listing and measure twice. Our size notes walk through that conflict.
| Listing | Mesh size | Door it says it fits |

Magnet strength is mostly a layout story
Almost nobody publishes gauss or pounds of pull, so we do not invent a strength ranking. What listings do publish is the layout. AUGO's fiberglass, 38 × 81 polyester, and 34 × 81 polyester pages say the magnets run the length of the seam, as opposed to short strips with gaps. Flux Phenom fiberglass screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) publishes a count: 52 magnets sewn into the seam on the U.S. listing and on Flux Phenom's own site. Homitt fiberglass screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) describes 26 magnetic strips. Falafa RV screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) describes 23.
A full-length seam is why AUGO stays our pick even without a count. Gaps between short magnets are where wasps and the neighbor's cat negotiate. A count is still useful, and Flux Phenom is the competitor that gives you one. There is a catch: an Amazon Australia page for the same Flux Phenom ASIN has also said 26 magnets. Read the live bullet. More on that in AUGO vs Flux Phenom.
Fiberglass mesh versus polyester mesh
Polyester is the soft, light curtain. It packs small, it is what most budget screens are, and it can sag or fuzz where claws hit it. Fiberglass is the material traditional window screen is woven from. Makers call it stiffer and harder to tear. We are repeating those material descriptions, not a SnapScreen abrasion test.
Buy fiberglass when the listing says fiberglass and pets or heavy traffic are the reason you are shopping. That is AUGO fiberglass screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab), Flux Phenom fiberglass screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab), and Homitt fiberglass screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab). Buy polyester when the opening is ordinary and you want the matching AUGO size: AUGO polyester 38 × 81 screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) for 36 × 80, or AUGO 34 × 81 screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) for 32 × 80. The older AUGO 38 × 83 mesh screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) page does not name the fiber in the bullets we checked. Do not assume it is the fiberglass door.
Hole size is another place listings get creative. Flux Phenom says about 1 mm openings. A Homitt description mentioned a 0.79 in grid, which is far too coarse to be insect mesh and is probably a bad translation, so we are not using it. If gnats are the actual problem, read the live mesh line and look at the photo of the weave. No screen in this catalog is a no-see-um guarantee from us.
Tacks, adhesive, and hook-and-loop
The usual kit is a fuzzy hook-and-loop tape with a peel-off adhesive, plus a bag of push pins or tacks. You stick the tape around the frame, press the screen on, and add pins on wood if the wind or a dog starts winning. AUGO's verified pages include both the tape and the pins. Flux Phenom also offers tacks so you can fold a too-wide hem in, and says that trick does not work on metal frames.
- Adhesive hook-and-loop is the no-drill path. It fails on dust, textured paint, fresh paint, and hot metal. It can lift paint when you remove it. That is the whole renter tradeoff, covered in the renter guide.
- Push pins and tacks bite into wood trim. They do not belong in vinyl, aluminum, or an RV skin.
- A weighted hem is not an install method, but it is why a screen stays shut in a breeze. MAGZO 36 × 96 screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) and Homitt fiberglass screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) describe gravity sticks. AUGO's pages that we checked emphasize the magnetic seam and snaps, not a weighted hem.
If a screen keeps hitting the floor, the fix is usually a re-hang, not a stronger magnet. How to keep a magnetic screen from falling is the troubleshooting page.
Pets and kids
"Pet friendly" on these listings means a child or a small dog can push the seam open without hands. It does not mean the mesh is claw-proof, and it does not mean a 70-pound dog will leave the tape on the trim. For that use, we still start with AUGO fiberglass screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) because the listing is specifically the fiberglass, pet-resistant mesh. Flux Phenom and Homitt make the same class of claim. Read pets and dogs before you trust any of them with a digger.
Kids and the magnet warning belong in the same thought. The screen is light enough for a toddler to open, which is the point, and the magnets are small enough to be dangerous if they come loose, which is the other point. The keep-open snaps on AUGO are for carrying groceries or airing the house, not for leaving a gap a toddler can pull magnets out of.
Why AUGO is the editor's pick
We feature AUGO because the listings we could verify cover more real doorways than any single competitor page, and the flagship says the quiet part out loud: full-length magnets, not a handful of dots. You can choose fiberglass (AUGO fiberglass screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab)) or polyester in a 36 × 80 fit (AUGO polyester 38 × 81 screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab)) and a 32 × 80 fit (AUGO 34 × 81 screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab)). There is a wide 74 × 81 listing (AUGO 74 × 81 screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab)). The fiberglass page also showed 38 × 97 and French Door chips when we opened it on October 31, 2026. Keep-open snaps are part of the product description, not a hack.
That is an opinion about published specs. It is not a prize, and it is not a wear test. Leave AUGO when the opening is outside those fit lines. An 8-foot door is better documented on MAGZO 36 × 96 screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab). A 72 × 80 slider is named in the title of MAGZO 72 × 80 screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab). A camper door near 30 inches wide is a different product: EJYTRVT RV screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab) or Falafa RV screen (Amazon, opens in a new tab), not a house screen folded until the magnets miss.

AUGO sells this one as pet-resistant fiberglass. That is a listing claim, not a claw test we ran. Large dogs can still peel tape or open the seam.

View on Amazon (Amazon, opens in a new tab)Questions people actually ask
What size magnetic screen door do I need?
Measure the clear opening, width and height, and use the smallest number if the frame is out of square. Then match a listing that states that fit. An AUGO 38 by 83 inch mesh is written for a 36 by 82 inch door, which is not the same figure as the mesh.
Is fiberglass mesh better than polyester?
Manufacturers describe fiberglass as the tougher, more claw-resistant option and polyester as the lighter everyday mesh. SnapScreen has not run a wear test. If pets push through daily, start with a listing that actually says fiberglass, such as the AUGO fiberglass screen.
Do stronger magnets always mean a better door?
Listings rarely publish pull force. Some count magnets, some say the magnets run the full length of the seam. A full-length seam can close gaps that spaced magnets leave. A published count, such as Flux Phenom's 52, is easier to compare on paper. Neither number is a lab result from us.
